Folsomia candida: White Springtails

Folsomia candida is one of the most widely kept springtails in the world and a staple for anyone breeding dart frogs, small amphibians or other tiny insectivores. These pure white, eyeless springtails grow to around 2 to 3 mm, making them slightly larger than many other species and an excellent feeder for froglets and small invertebrates. The species is so reliable that it is used as a standard test organism in scientific laboratories.

Steady, dependable reproduction

Folsomia candida reproduces mainly by parthenogenesis, so every individual can lay eggs and colonies grow without needing males. Juveniles reach maturity in about 3 to 4 weeks at room temperature, and a well-kept culture produces a constant supply of springtails of all sizes. This makes it one of the most predictable and productive feeder cultures you can keep.

Grows best on ISM-1

Our cultures are fed on ISM-1, Bioryza dedicated food for springtails and isopods. Folsomia candida feeds on it eagerly, juveniles develop quickly and colonies reach high densities in a short time. If you need a strong feeder culture with regular harvests, ISM-1 is the simplest way to keep it productive.

Easy care

This species does best at 18 to 26°C and should be kept on constantly moist substrate, as it does not tolerate drying out. Fresh air is only needed occasionally: opening the container once a week is enough.

Feeder and clean up crew in one

In terrariums Folsomia candida breaks down leftover food, organic waste and mould, keeping the enclosure clean and helping to prevent fungal problems. Because it moves more slowly and jumps less than Ceratophysella species, it is also easier for small animals to catch, which is why it remains a favourite live food for froglets.
